Our main objectives are to provide the community with professional medical technologists who will contribute to the health care through performance, reporting, interpreting and correlating of laboratory tests. We aim to provide the clinical laboratory program with continues updates, knowledge and the use of high computer skills in medical laboratory teaching and training to meet scientific and technological development. We also offer elite graduates prestigious scholarships to earn higher degrees such as M.Sc and Ph.D degrees in the field of medical laboratories. As for our local community, we always strive to help through organizing special medical workshops for medical technologists as well as workshops for public audience. This is part of our continues-education program that helps medical technologists improve their skills and satisfy the demand of hospitals and private labs locally and abroad. Nevertheless, we provide a good research environment for researchers and the research market with highly skilled medical laboratory professionals.
Future Vision and ambitions of Medical laboratory
- Continue the upgrade program for the diploma degree holders.
- National and international recognition and accreditation.
- Academic staff. The department hopes to increase faculty members holding PhD degree to 10 by (2015/2016).
- Open medical days. These days introduce the students to the community, and make them contribute to health care through the performance of some general medical tests, posters and broachers, hoping to increase the awareness about Medical laboratory service.
- Professional consultation through the University Clinic or Medical laboratory department.
- Developing the department research labs.
What is Medical Technology?
Medical Technologists are highly skilled laboratory scientists who perform and evaluate laboratory procedures using a variety of sophisticated instruments. They perform, supervise and provide consultation for laboratory analyses on blood and various body fluids to obtain data on which a diagnosis is made and appropriate therapy initiated. The major disciplines in laboratory science are:
Immunohematology (blood banking)
An individual may specialize in one of these disciplines or remain a generalist, depending on the type of laboratory and the needs of the facility in which they are employed. A career in medical technology provides opportunities for work that are both personally rewarding and challenging.
As cost consciousness in health care delivery has increased, Medical Technologists have become increasingly valuable to the health care system. This is because Medical Technologists are knowledgeable about cost effective ways to deliver quality care and are trained to make the kinds of decisions that make effective lab services possible. Medical Technologists assume positions of increasing responsibility in clinical laboratories and within institution management structure. Their functions include managing the laboratory and directing the work of others performing complex laboratory analyses and making judgments about the quality of laboratory results before they are reported. Medical technologists must be experts in clinical laboratory science as well as in the administrative and managerial functions necessary to ensure the effective operation of clinical laboratory services.
